Day 4: Madrid to home

Our flight home this evening isn't until the afternoon, so we had time for a final walk around Madrid this morning before heading back to the airport. Getting three separate metros had from the airport to Atocha had been a bit complicated when we arrived on Thursday, so we decided that a good plan might be to walk from one side of the city centre to the other, in the direction of the metro station Nuevos Ministerios. It was an easy walk - essentially along one long road in a straight line - and from there we'd be able to get a metro direct to the airport.

Despite all the weather forecasts threatening rain, it was another bright sunny day when we checked out of the hotel and stepped outside.

The road we were walking on was quite scenic, first of all taking us along the outskirts of the Buen Retiro park, which we'd visited on Thursday evening, and then past Museo del Prado, which is Spain's main art museum.

This seemed to be a very upmarket part of town and we passed impressive hotels...

...monuments...

...and fountains.

We passed the national library of Spain...

...which we'd had a tour of with a friend back in 2017.

We walked through a square which was home to a big statue of Christopher Columbus...

...and then found ourselves outside a more modern art installation, plus a huge Spanish flag.

We didn't find any Esperanto streets in Madrid, but we did walk through a square which was inexplicably named after Margaret Thatcher!

We also walked past the museum of natural sciences, which was in a rather grand building...

...and found another huge Spanish flag.

Madrid airport is huge, and given the chaos we'd had at passport control on the way here, we were keen to get there early to make sure we didn't have any problems. We caught the metro at Nuevos Ministerios straight to Terminal 4, where we went through security (my boarding pass scanned absolutely fine this time!) and then caught another train to Terminal 4S, which is where the UK flights depart from. They seemed to have given up trying to use the new e-gates and machines in Madrid today so we were directed straight past them to normal human passport control, which was very efficient.

It had all been much quicker than I feared, so we had plenty of time to relax in the lounge with a view of the runway...

...and some snacks...

...while waiting to board our flight back to the UK. It's been a really fun long weekend away in Madrid, and I'm sure we'll definitely be back at some point :)
