Day 4: New York to home

Our flight back to London wasn't until 18.30 this evening, so even with needing to be at the airport three hours in advance we still had the best part of a day to spend in New York today. We got up, checked out of the hotel and went for a final McDonalds breakfast. The weather today was a complete contrast to yesterday; really bright and sunny with a beautiful blue sky, although it was incredibly windy. We'd seen the majority of the big things we wanted to see in New York over the past couple of days, so after breakfast we decided to walk northwards and explore the bit of Central Park which we hadn't managed to see on Friday afternoon.

We passed through a square with a statue of Christopher Colombus...

...and visited Sesame Street en route.

Then we followed a road alongside the far edge of the park. We passed a church squeezed between tall buildings...

...and the American Natural History museum.

Parts of Central Park are quite rocky and there were some incredible icicles hanging from the rocks.

Central Park is huge and we walked for quite a long way, before eventually getting to the spot I wanted to see; a big reservoir at the top end of the park.

image.jpeg

There's a path around the reservoir, which you're only allowed to walk around anti-clockwise so that you don't get in the way of people trying to jog.

The views of the New York skyline from here were absolutely stunning, especially with the icy water in the foreground.

We were so impressed with them that we even attempted some selfies.

image.jpeg

As you can see, it was quite windy :D

So windy that, as we were walking away from the reservoir later, we nearly got taken out by an enormous pine cone falling from the trees above us!

We walked back through the park, passing this rather unusual (and fake-looking!) castle on the way.

image.jpeg

We passed one of the smaller frozen lakes we'd seen on Friday...

image.jpeg

...and found this pretty bridge which we definitely hadn't seen on Friday.

image.jpeg

There were some great views from here of all the tall buildings in the distance.

Once we left the park, we took the subway back down to the bottom of Manhattan, near where we'd caught the ferries on previous days. From there we walked for around 15 minutes or so until we got to a viewpoint from where we could see the Brooklyn Bridge.

image.jpeg

The bridge is huge (and it was very windy here too!)

image.jpeg

All that remained was to enjoy some more New York pizza for lunch and start making our way back to the airport.

image.jpeg

As we walked towards the nearest subway station, we got a final amazing view of the huge World Trade Center Building which had been completely obscured by the clouds yesterday.

We took a subway back to Penn Station, with a slight diversion when we initially caught one going in the wrong direction and had to retrace our steps by a few stations. We had plenty of time though and were soon back on track, retracing our steps from Friday's journey to JFK.

Our flight is at 18.30 New York time (so 23.30 UK time), getting back to Heathrow at 06.30 on Tuesday morning. The plan is then to drive home and do the majority of a day's work on Tuesday, which seemed like a great idea when we initially booked these cheap flights and then began to feel like a less great idea once we got closer to having to actually do it. As Tim's Christmas present I'd therefore already paid to upgrade the return flight to business class when I got an offer through from BA, in the hope that we'll be able to get some sleep in the lie-flat seats.

That meant that once we'd got through security, we were able to access the airport lounge which was rather exciting.

We set about making the most of the free food and drinks, plus using the free WiFi to do this blog. It's been a fun end to what has been a really exciting trip to New York :)
