When we woke up this morning we found that the temperature wasn't quite as cold as yesterday. The thermometer outside the cabin suggested it was around minus 15.
The day wasn't quite as bright as yesterday either; there was a cloudy sky and it looked like it might snow at some point.
Our plan for today was to walk to a village called Laanila, which is on the outskirts of Saariselkä.
It's a very small place and there's nothing to do once you get there (except turn around and walk back to Saariselkä!) but there's a lovely winter hiking trail through the forest.
Normally I spend this walk taking photos of trees covered in snow. Today's trees were all quite green!
There was still evidence of a lot of snow in places, though. We realised as we walked that this bump sticking out of the snow was a buried car
There were plenty of places where I saw animal tracks in the snow too, although we didn't spot any wildlife today.
The walk to Laanila is a few kilometres. I'd remembered it as being a flat walk, but it was actually quite uphill in places.
As we got closer to the end we crossed over a route for snowmobiles...
...and then walked past a cross country ski run.
The ski run had an interesting sign! I guess Google Maps must show this as a path.
By this point we'd reached the metropolis of Laanila...
... so it was time to turn around and head back to Saariselkä.
We enjoyed the snowy landscape again on the way back
As we got closer to Saariselkä we passed a house where it looked like the snow was in danger of sliding off the roof!
We also realised that in the distance, we could just make out the top of Kaunispää hill, which we'd climbed yesterday. It's not very clear, but if you can see a dark smudge above the trees in the photo below, those are some buildings near the summit of the hill.
It actually looked higher than we expected from down here! But we really enjoyed that walk yesterday, so we're contemplating doing it again tomorrow
