Today it was time to head back to the UK, but before we did that we had a few hours left to explore the town of A Coruña, which we should have flown into on Friday. We we booked on a 10.37 train from Santiago de Compostela to A Coruña. Luckily I got us to the station with plenty of time to spare, because boarding the train turned out to be a somewhat slow process. We had to join a queue for security, passing our bags through a scanner, before proceeding on to a ticket check.
Once we got on the train the journey was pretty short and we arrived in A Coruña not long after 11am. A Coruña is the second biggest town in Galicia after Vigo and it certainly felt like a big place when we stepped off the train. The train station is located quite a way outside the town centre, and so we had a fairly long walk along the main road until we got to anywhere that looked remotely scenic.
Once we hit the park, the walk became a bit more pleasant.
We soon found ourselves in a square...
...where there were some attractive buildings.
The route brought us around to the harbour area.
We realised there was an enormous cruise ship in the port!
The harbour was pretty though
The square behind us was fully of beautiful white buildings.
They were really striking.
Once we'd passed the harbour we were on the edge of A Coruña's old town.
It wasn't quite as big as the old towns we'd seen in Lugo and Vigo this weekend.
There were still some pretty little streets though...
...and some churches.
Once we'd exhausted the sights of the old town, we found a shady bar to sit down and get a drink. I was impressed by the free snacks!
Then it was time to track down the bus stop and head to the airport for our flight home. It's been a fun break exploring a region of Spain we've never been to before, and really nice to get some sunshine and blue skies
