Despite an early night last night we weren't in any hurry to get up this morning. Tim's meeting wasn't starting until 12, which is quite a civilised time for a meeting, so we were able to have a leisurely start to the day. It felt cold outside but not quite as cold as yesterday, and the sky was grey as if it might start snowing. Once we'd had breakfast and Tim had gone off to his meeting, I set out to explore a bit more of Tampere.
Not far from the apartment where we're staying there's a Moomin museum and outside that there's a statue of Moomintroll
It was fun to see, though I had expected it might be a bit bigger!
Everywhere was still very icy and in the park outside the museum, the pond was completely frozen over.
Not far around the corner I found Tampere's cathedral.
Tampere is situated between two lakes, Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi. I walked to lake Näsijärvi first, which is the one on the northern side of Tampere.
It looked like it would be really lovely here in summertime.
It was a bit chilly today, though - the lake was frozen as far as I could see.
Some people were skating or skiing on it.
I walked along the shore of the lake for a while.
I can imagine it would be beautiful here in the summer with a blue sky
As I got further along I could see what looked like a funfair on the opposite side of the lake. Apparently there's a viewing platform at the top of the big tower, but I don't think there would have been much of a view today.
I turned inwards from the lake and ended up in a park.
This monument is to commemorate a steam ship which sank in the lake in 1929.
It looked like there were lots of little paths to explore in the park but in places it was quite icy.
I stuck to the main paths, which were quite well gritted.
Once I emerged from the park I passed a small church...
...followed by some colourful wooden houses...
...and then passed what I think was the park's main entrance.
From there I decided to walk straight across the town, to the lake on the opposite side.
There was essentially one big tree-lined avenue which I could follow all the way across to the other lake.
On the way I walked past the Alexander church which we'd seen yesterday.
From there, there was still a way to go.
The shore of lake Pyhäjärvi seems to be very wooded.
When I arrived there I could only just get glimpses of it through the trees.
There were some lovely paths to follow through the forest.
It had been snowing for a couple of hours by this point, though only lightly, so there was a sprinkling of snow on the paths.
Eventually I got a clearer view of the lake This one didn't seem to be completely frozen.
I spotted a little island out in the lake.
I attempted to take a selfie with it, but it was a bit difficult because I didn't have my stick
I'd come quite a long way by this point and it was starting to get a bit slippery, so I decided to turn around and walk back into the centre of town.
I went back by a slightly different route, passing some more nice wooden houses.
There was a bit more snow everywhere now.
I made it back to the main square...
...and found out that this bright yellow building I'd seen yesterday is Tampere Old Church.
It was built in 1829, which doesn't sound terribly old by church standards!
Once I'd crossed the bridge over the rapids, I was nearly back to the apartment.
Which was good, because it really was snowing quite a lot by this point!
I went back to the apartment for a bit to warm up and wait for Tim. In the evening we went out to eat with the Finnish Esperantists again. We were more successful with food choices this time; I had a chicken burger and Tim had a beef stew, so no surprise pizzas today
