This trip to Catalonia wasn't part of our plans, but a couple of factors came together to cause it to happen. Earlier this year I accidentally gained a passive knowledge of Catalan when I for some reason chose to read a 1,300-page novel in the language. And secondly, I noticed on Facebook that one of my friends who I've not see for years is co-organising an Esperanto congress there, and that some other friends of mine will be visiting too. So I decided to go it alone.
The event will be held in Mataró, about 30 km north-east of Barcelona, and that's where I'll be spending the first three nights. Coming home proved to be a challenge though, and it eventually became clear that the best I could do would be to fly home from Valencia at about 22:00 on the Tuesday. That effectively gave me two whole bonus days to use. A bit of preliminary research has pushed me into choosing Tarragona as the location for the Monday night, so I'm planning to do something like the following:
Friday, Saturday, Sunday: Mataró
Monday: Mataró > Castelldefels > Sitges > Vilanova i la Geltrú > Tarragona
Tuesday: Tarragona > Castellón > Valencia
All being well, I'll arrive home in the early hours of Wednesday morning, at which point I'll have to be careful not to scare Clare ... and also not to be knocked over by two extremely starved cats!
